Was Babe Ruth Black?

Babe Ruth with his new wife Claire, 1930.

Besides the conclusions that have already been made about this topic, I was astonished to recently learn in Leigh Montville’s biography on Ruth called “The Big Bam” that a statue of St. Martin de Porres, known as the Patron Saint of mixed-race people, stood on Babe’s nightstand near his deathbed.

If that’s true… that’s compelling evidence!

While we’re on the subject of baseball, there’s the flat-out failure of Commissioner Bud Selig and his Veterans’ Committee to induct the Negro League legend Buck O’Neill into the Baseball Hall of Fame before his death.
